Parties Vow Smooth Assembly

In a rare display of unity, floor leaders of the three main political parties agreed to a "gridlock-free" Assembly Wednesday.

Rep. Lee Sang-soo of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party, Rep. Chung Chang-wha of the opposition Grand National Party and Rep. Lee Yang-hee of the United Liberal Democrats issued a joint statement declaring that they will work together in the parliamentary proceedings that lie ahead.

The three legislators agreed to put election reform, combating corruption, ending regionalism and breaking the collusive ties between politics and business on the agenda of the political reform committee.

The opposition party has been pushing for the four changes for some time. However, despite the congenial tone of the joint declaration, the floor leaders did not agree to table another core opposition initiative - legislation barring political retaliation.
