3 Key Enemies Of Ruling Bloc Now Facing Legal Action
Three former and current representatives of the opposition party, known for their frequent political attacks on the ruling camp, are facing legal action, raising questions about whether the government is now attacking them. The Seoul District Prosecutors Office said Friday that it will summon former representative Lee Shin-bom, who heads the Gangseo B district chapter of the opposition Grand National Party. Mr. Lee, who is implicated in six legal cases, has defied the prosecution's request for a voluntary appearance.
"He is implicated in six complaints or lawsuits," a prosecution official said. "We plan to proceed by the book."
The legislator is known for leading offensives against the ruling Millennium Democratic Party with charges that Lee Hyung-ja, wife of the former chairman of the bankrupt Shindongah Group, lobbied First Lady Lee Hee-ho to earn her husband and his business preferential treatment. His charges resulted in probes that led to resignations of government officials.
Former legislator Hong Joon-pyo and Rep. Chung Hyung-keun have already been charged. Mr. Hong was stripped of his parliamentary seat in 1999 when a court found him guilty of illegal electioneering during the 1996 general elections. Mr. Chung was indicted in January 2001 on charges of libel.
