Kim Never Planned To Amend Charter
President Kim Dae-jung said Thursday that he never gave serious thought to amending the constitution to permit Korean presidents to serve more than one term and to create a new post of vice president. He spoke during an interview with local newspapers in South Kyongsang province and North Chungchong province.
A number of politicians have suggested revising the constitution before the coming presidential election in 2002.
Regarding the yet-to-be-selected ruling party's presidential candidate, Mr. Kim emphasized that the candidate should have deference to the people's will as well as the right principles.
Mr. Kim has tried not to speak about the next presidential candidate, fearing that his presidency would suffer from lame-duck syndrome.
