Government Sway Over Media Denied

The Government Information Agency said Thursday that recent media reports of the U.S. government's annual survey of human rights around the world take negative phrases out of context or interpret them at will.

Oh Hong-keun, head of the agency, said the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for the year 2000 clearly states that the Korean media enjoy complete freedom to criticize the government and that the government does not repress the media. Yet certain local media reports, he said, may give the contrary impression.

He acknowledged that the State Department report states that the Korean government continues to "influence" the media, but said that "influence" has a completely different connotation than "control."
