Schwartz Cautions On DPRK Strength

General Thomas Schwartz, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, said Tuesday that the threat posed by North Korea has increased.

At a U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee budget hearing, Mr. Schwartz said he disagreed with those who believe the threat from the North has been reduced as tensions have eased.

He urged that U.S. forces in Korea not be reduced, and said there was a marked imbalance in firepower, especially artillery, across the DMZ. Although a small country, he said, the DPRK still has the world's largest firepower.

In Seoul, the Ministry of National Defense announced that the North is producing tanks and small submarines, introducing MIG-21 aircraft and continuously expanding its Scud and Rodong missile bases.
