'Political Tool' Charge By Police Draws Fire
The Korea National Police University alumni association has created a stir with its statement expressing concern about the fallout from the incident involving the beating of demonstrating Daewoo Motor Co. union members. The association posted an official statement of its position on the crackdown on its Web site (www.police.go.kr) on Thursday.
The declaration reads, "We humbly accept the people's reprimand and concern over the excessive use of force on April 10 as an opportunity for self-reflection. We hope this will start a fundamental discussion on ways to handle demonstrations and rallies, and we will further endeavor to reform from within."
However, it also states, "The recent disdain for the police by society in general dampens the morale of the police force and does not in any way help the people." Adding, "We oppose being used as a political tool."
The remarks are arousing criticism not only from union groups, but also some police officers.
The statement is particularly being read by many as an indirect expression of opposition to the dismissal of Lee Moo-young, head of the national police agency, as his responsibility for the crackdown is being discussed.
"I do not understand their action," said a high-ranking police official.
Another said, "Many of the alumni were not made aware of the statement."
However, Hwang Un-ha, president of the association, insisted, "The statement is representative, as it was decided upon by 50 or so members, including presidents of each graduating class."
