After-Kim Talk Swirls in His Party
Kim Joong-kwon, a member of the Supreme Council of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party, said he thinks it is reasonable for the ruling party to select a candidate for the 2002 presidential elections sooner rather than later."Although in certain circles people are opposed to the early selection of a presidential candidate, because they feel it could undermine the last part of the president's term in office, I do not think so," he said.
Citing his personal experience as secretary for political affairs at the Blue House under former President Roh Tae-woo, he said, "The loss of political potency that presidents experience at the end of their terms does not come from within. A president does not become ineffective just because his party's presidential candidate has been decided upon."
With regard to the activities of presidential hopefuls, Mr. Kim said during a party leadership meeting, "I will suggest a candidate to the chairman at an appropriate time in an appropriate manner."
He added that, "A capable person is not brought up overnight and the party's role lies in rearing a capable candidate and showing him to the public."
President Kim Dae-jung, who chairs the party, said in an interview with the Buddhism Broadcasting System, "It is still too early to name a candidate. And because our economy is having difficulties, I am focusing all my energy there."
The Blue House is said to have slated the selection of its next presidential candidate for June of next year when a party convention will be held after the conclusion of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Party spokesman Jeon Yong-hak said, "Mr. Kim's statements are only his personal opinions on the topic of the early selection of a candidate, which is being discussed in certain party circles."
