Korea Wins a Seat On UN Right Panel
Korea was elected Thursday to the 53-member United Nations Commission on Human Rights headquartered in Geneva by a vote in the UN Economic and Social Council. About one third of the commission is elected by region each year for three-year terms. Bahrain and Pakistan were elected to the other two seats allotted to Asian countries. The United States lost its seat on the commission for the first time since it was formed in 1947. It was contending with France, Austria and Sweden for three regional seats, but came up short in the balloting. Putting the best face on the defeat, a U.S. official at the UN expressed disappointment but pointed to the strength of the competition for the seats.
