EU and Pyongyang To Set Official Ties
The European Union has decided to establish official diplomatic ties with North Korea, its Seoul delegation announced Monday."We hope this would promote efforts by the European Union to support inter-Korean rapprochement and economic reforms [in the North] and especially help alleviate food shortages and sanitary problems," said the delegation.
A Foreign Ministry official explained, "The EU decision was announced with the implied consent of France and Ireland, which do not have diplomatic relations with North Korea."
The announcement had been briefly held up over the weekend when one European country asked for further discussion. Monday's announcement did not explain the source of the delay or how it was resolved.
