Opposition to Back Name Law for Kids

The Grand National Party decided Tuesday that it would support legislation to allow children whose mothers remarried to take the last name of their stepfathers.

Representative Kim Mahn-je, chairman of the Policy Committee, said, "I will make efforts to have the National Assembly ratify the amendment bill with the clause [on stepchildren] before working on the controversial issue of homosexual marriage."

He added, "The suffering incurred by 160,000 remarried women and their children is a human-rights issue."

Another Grand National Party legislator, Choi Yeon-hee, said that "there is no difference between the ruling and opposition parties over the clause," except on the age of the children to whom it would apply.
