Seoul Firm on Rights to Kurils Fishing

The South Korean government plans to lodge an official protest with the Japanese government Monday over Japan's decision postponing Korean fishing fleets' operation in the Sanriku Sea off the coast of Iwate prefecture in northern Japan.

The Japanese decision was made after Korean boats were found fishing for mackerel off the Kuril Islands north of Japan. A government official said Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo will summon Japanese Ambassador Terusuke Terada to his office Monday and state that Japan's move goes against international law and customs.

The official added that Korean boats have every right to operate off the Kuril Islands in accordance with an agreement with Russia, and he added that the Koreans have no plans to stop fishing there.
