Kim Reprimands The Truant Golfers
President Kim Dae-jung issued a warning Tuesday to the military leaders who continued their golf games earlier this month after receiving reports of the intrusion of North Korean commercial vessels. The leaders are Defense Minister Kim Dong-shin, Gen. Cho Yung-kil, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Adm. Chang Jeong-gil, Navy chief of staff.Mr. Kim said the South Korean military leaders "appropriately and rationally" dealt with the intrusion of North Korean vessels. But playing golf during an operation was not a laudable act and went counter to the expectation of the Korean people, he said.
The president emphasized in particular that Mr. Cho's not returning to the Joint Chiefs headquarters after his golf game could incite criticism.
