Cash Machine Users Get Help

Continuing a near-daily string of consumer protection initiatives, the government said Wednesday that the responsibility for electronic banking problems will be on the institution unless it can show that its customer was clearly at fault.

An official at the Fair Trade Commission said the new rules will be effective in September. Before then, the antitrust watchdog agency will examine and standardize the provisions of electronic banking contracts between banks and customers and require that banks adhere to standard requirements. The standard provisions to be introduced will hold the bank responsible for errors which cannot be shown clearly to be the customer's fault.
