Cathedral Asks Dan To Leave Sanctuary

Myongdong Cathedral formally requested Wednesday that Dan Byung-ho, head of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions who entered its grounds claiming sanctuary from arrest on June 30, remove himself from the cathedral compound by July 31.

"Thirty days of sanctuary at church is enough time to arrange a dialogue with the government and settle the debate within the confederation on the proper judgment and action," the church wrote in a letter to Mr. Dan. "The confederation's having interviews or holding a central executive committee meeting on the church ground was already beyond the church's intention to offer 'a sanctuary'."

Several hundred police ring the cathedral, prepared to enforce an arrest warrant charging Mr. Dan with organizing an illegal series of strikes last month.
