Lawmen Peek Under Officials' Curtains

Law enforcement authorities are reportedly probing the public and private lives of 90 cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and other senior officers. Senior government sources said the authorities are focusing on the officials' managerial ability, their reputation among their colleagues and subordinates, implementation of major policies, relations with the media and public relations activities.

Key officials such as the director-general of the National Intelligence Service, the prosecutor general and the commissioner of the National Tax Service are among those being investigated, the sources said. It reportedly delves into the officials' personal lives as well, including relations with politicians, income and wealth sources, any allegations of extramarital affairs and their ability to handle their liquor.

An official at a law enforcement agency said, "The probe is being undertaken at the order of the Blue House." He said it was aimed at strengthening the ongoing anti-corruption drive in light of the enactment of the Anti-Corruption Act last month. (Editorial, Page 3.)

The prime minister's office is also evaluating the activities of lower-level officials in the central and local governments. An official there said, "The check-up is aimed at finding out how the administrative reform agenda is being carried out at government agencies."
