2-Way DMZ Pullback Hinted by U.S. Aide

WASHINGTON - If North Korea were to withdraw its military forces stationed near the Demilitarized Zone, the United States could follow suit, Thomas Hubbard, the ambassador-designate to South Korea said Thursday.

Mr. Hubbard, who is also deputy under secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was speaking at his confirmation hearings before a Senate committee.

"The U.S. is currently trying to restart dialogue with North Korea on its conventional military power," Mr. Hubbard said, adding that "It has not had actual talks on the matter with the North so far."

Asked whether South Korea or the United States should lead negotiations on easing the North's military power, Mr. Hubbard stressed that the two countries should cooperate closely.
