Ministry Skeptical Of Japan Summit
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Sunday it has received no official proposal from Japan for a summit meeting. The denial followed Japanese media reports that Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi of Japan said he wants to visit Korea and China before the summit meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Shanghai in October.
Before any summit can be held, the Foreign Ministry said, Japan should take "sincere actions" to offset the history textbook published by Japanese rightist groups and Prime Minister Koizumi's recent visit to the Yasukuni Shrine, a shrine to Japanese war dead.
According to Japanese press reports, Mr. Koizumi told his Foreign Ministry on Friday to coordinate schedules with Seoul and Beijing.
