Kim to Be Honored As World Statesman

President Kim Dae-jung has been chosen to receive the World Statesman Award for 2001 by the New York-based Appeal of Conscience Foundation. The annual award is for contributions to peace, freedom and democracy, the Blue House said Thursday.

U.S. President George W. Bush is the honorary chairman of the presentation that will take place on Sept. 25 in New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel. South Korean Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo will receive the award on behalf of the president.

Past recipients of the award include German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in 2000, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in 1999, Indian President K.R. Narayan in 1998, King Juan Carlos of Spain in 1997 and former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi in 1996.
