Bipartisan Fury Hits Idea of Rice Price Cut

Politicians across the spectrum on Monday denounced the government's plan to cut the price at which the government purchases rice.

The governing Millennium Democratic Party met with Agriculture Minister Kim Dong-tae and called on him not to lower the price.

Kim Mahn-je, chief policymaker of the opposition Grand National Party, said his party opposed lowering the price before a plan is set up to preserve a steady income for farmers.

The Agriculture Ministry had proposed lowering the price at which the government purchases rice from farmers by 4 to 5 percent. Since such a measure requires parliamentary consent, the idea is unlikely to be implemented if the parties continue their opposition.
