Pyeongyang cancels ambassadors' visit

NEW YORK - A group of former U. S. ambassadors to South Korea have canceled their intended visit to Pyeongyang, the New York Times reported Saturday. The four U.S. ambassadors and Robert A. Scalapino, professor emeritus at the University of California, had been scheduled to visit North Korea Feb. 23-26, after the South Korea-U.S. summit meeting.

The New York Times verified from the North Korean delegation to the United Nations that Pyeongyang had canceled the visit. The newspaper saw the move as a sign of growing hostility after President Bush's harsh words about North Korea. The ambassadors intended to visit Pyeongyang Feb. 19-22, but were asked to wait until after President Bush's visit to Seoul Feb. 19-21.
