North arms exports said rising

WASHINGTON - North Korea's economy depends on weapons sales, and Pyeongyang has increased exports of missile technology, General Thomas A. Schwartz, commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces, said Tuesday.

In his report to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, the general also assured the senators that there was no evidence of North Korean involvement in international terrorism. He also said the North has kept its promise so far of halting missile tests until 2003.

General Schwartz said that he has specific evidence of North Korean missile and weapons sales and claimed Pyeongyang also actively exports artillery, tanks and submarines. He said the North is the world's number one producer of submarines, despite the nation's small size. He predicted North Korea's weapons exports would not cease in the near future.
