Spurned said ready to pull up MDP stake

July 17,2002
Some members of the Millennium Democratic Party who were not nominated to run in National Assembly by-elections appear ready to quit the party, MDP sources said on Wednesday.

Jeong Heung-jin, who was not nominated for the vacant seat in Seoul's Jongno district, may quit the party and run as an independent, they said. Supporters of Son Yeung-chae, the former mayor of Hanam, Gyeonggi province, protested in front of MDP headquarters in Yeouido on Wednesday. His backers were angry that he was not chosen to run for the empty seat representing Hanam.

Sources close to the former MDP chairman, Kim Joong-kwon, said a close aide to Roh Moo-hyun, the party's presidential candidate, asked him last week to drop his plan to seek the nomination for the vacant seat from Seoul's Geumcheon district. Mr. Kim is said to be angry at Mr. Roh for the apparent snub.

On Tuesday, Park Kye-dong of the Grand National Party demanded an explanation as to why he was not nominated to fill the vacant seat in the Jongno district. The GNP's Lee Shin-bom, who was passed over for Seoul's Yeongdeungpo district, accused Lee Hoi-chang, the party's presidential candidate, of secretly influencing nominations.
