Annual military drill to begin on Aug. 19

The U.S.-Korean Combined Forces Command said Wednesday that the 2002 Ulchi-Focus Lens exercise will be held Aug. 19-30. The annual drill is a command post exercise that does not involve movements of warfighting units.

U.S. units in Japan and Guam will join the annual drill.

The Combined Forces Command said it had tried Monday to notify North Korea of the exercise, but the North refused to accept the notification.

"The mood of the North-South Korean dialogue will not influence the form or content of this exercise," a Joint Chiefs of Staff aide said. "But because the U.S.-Korean crisis management team was activated for the operation to salvage the sunken navy speedboat, some training involving that team may also be a part of the exercise."
