North signals hope for ties with Japan

North Korea is ready for serious talks with Japan, including a dialogue to establish diplomatic ties between the two countries, the North Korean official daily newspaper Rodong Sinmun said Monday.

In an editorial, the newspaper urged Pyeongyang and Tokyo toward negotiations that would break the string of unsuccessful attempts to normalize their relations.

In October 2000, the two governments held talks that broke down over North Korean demands for a Japanese apology and compensation for its colonization of Korea and over Japanese demands for information about Japanese citizens allegedly kidnapped by North Korea.

Red Cross officials of the two countries will meet in Pyeongyang next Monday.
