'Great,' 'Dear' ones losing school room
The portraits of Kim Il Sung, the late North Korean leader, and his son Kim Jong-il are likely to be taken down at the elementary and middle schools in Japan attended by pro-Pyeongyang Koreans living in Japan.Kim Jong-il, chairman of the North Korean National Defense Commission gave these instructions to Huh Jong-man, vice chairman of General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, when the pro-North group visited North Korea last month, an official of the group said.
Such a step, he said, "can get rid of political coloration and a sense of incongruity in schools, and the students who don't have any relationship [with the pro-North group] can study undisturbed." The group said the portraits in about 80 elementary and middle schools will be taken down by Sunday.
