Navy will purchase two landing ships

South Korea will procure two amphibious landing ships by 2010. The ships, code-named LPX, are the equivalent of light aircraft carriers.

The National Defense Ministry told the National Assembly Monday that the ships, expected to displace 18,000 tons fully loaded, will cost approximately 951.3 billion won ($792.8 million). The ministry plans to approve a first installment of 18.1 billion won in October.

Hanjin Heavy Industries will build the ships, which are capable of transporting 700 Marines, 10 helicopters, 2 air-cushioned landing craft and 10 tanks.

The ministry said that the project was of great strategic importance to the navy, and should be funded despite the expense of other weapons deals, including the FX fighter jet.
