Talk to Pyeongyang, Koizumi urges U.S.

TOKYO -- Junichiro Koizumi, the Japanese prime minister, urged the United States to resume talks with North Korea as soon as possible, Japanese news media reported Wednesday.

"I conveyed frankly to Kim Jong-il at the summit meeting in Pyeongyang the United States' worries on weapon of mass destruction," Mr. Koizumi said at a press conference after the Asia-Europe Meeting in Copenhagen on Tuesday.

"As Kim Jong-il has showed his will to talk with the United States, Mr. Bush should talk with the North as soon as possible" he added.

Mr. Koizumi reconfirmed his stance on economic aid to the North, saying "I have no plan to offer economic aid to North Korea before normalization talks begin between the countries."
