WASHINGTON -- North Korea will be invited to the annual conference of the International Monetary Fund next year, the Ministry of Finance and Economy said Sunday.Horst Koehler, managing director of the fund, told Finance Minister Jeon Yun-churl on Saturday that he will invite North Korea as a special guest at the conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
If Pyeongyang wants to be a member of the International Monetary Fund, Mr. Koehler said, it will be provided with technical support to bring its institutions up to international standards, the ministry said.
Considering the new movement of North Korea toward opening its economy, Pyeongyang is likely to accept the invitation, an official said.
