Electrolux adds Korean unit

Electrolux Group, the Sweden-based home appliances maker, launched a Korean subsidiary yesterday. "Korea's electronics market is the third largest in Asia, following Japan and China. Annual sales in Korea reached $2.4 billion last year," said Fredrik Ramen, the chief executive of the group's East Asia regional offices. The Sweden -based headquarter posted $14 billion sales in 150 countries as of December in 2001. "We will try to establish 400 retail networks in department stores, discount stores and online shopping malls," Mr. Ramen said. "Korean electronics manufacturers have high competitiveness but Electrolux will concentrate on presenting environmental friendly products." Mr. Ramen emphasized localization of products and securing more customer care centers to meet Korean customers' needs. Electrolux Korea introduced a robot vacuum cleaner that was manufactured by the Swedish company for the first time in the world two years ago. "Depending on the technology over use does not always bring the best results," Mr. Ramen warned. "Customers prefer useful and comfortable devices over strictly high technology goods." The chief executive presented an example of the world's first refrigerator with Internet Web browsing monitors produced by the Swedish headquarter in 1999. "Consumers did not show much interest in Internet refrigerators." by Kim Hae-noon
