3 firms win electronics awards

LAS VEGAS -- Three domestic companies were awarded Innovation Awards at the 2003 International Consumer Electronics Show yesterday, which runs three days from Jan. 9 to 12 here in Nevada.

Samsung Electronics was nominated for its digital camcorder and a home theater system; Mocomtech, a video screen maker, and Digitalway, an audio developer, were the two other Korean awardees.

About 2,000 companies around the world, including Intel, Microsoft, and Sony, are taking part in the event, boasting state-of-the-art home appliances. Videos and audios that were benefited from the cutting edge information technology were the mainstay of the event.

Samsung Electronics displayed world's largest flat-screen televisions, a 63-inch plasma display panel television and a 54-inch thin-film transistor-liquid crystal display television set.

The company also showed digital light processing televisions, which are half the price of plasma display televisions but provide twice the video quality.

LG Electronics exhibited more than 100 computer monitors, videos and audios, which were under the company's local brand Zenith.

Panasonic of Japan grabbed the spectators' attention with a mini camcorder that can be placed on a palm, and Sharp Electronics showed a three-dimensional display that does not require special glasses.

Samsung's honored digital camcorder uses a 1.5 gigabyte hard disk for a recording device. The hard disk can record up to 66 minutes of video files. The company's home theater system was assessed to provide audio and video quality that outstripped existing products.

Digitalway's MP3 player won the award for its high capacity to record music even though it weighs only 29 grams.
