Microsoft says some PCs at risk

Ko Hyun-jin, president of Microsoft Korea, said yesterday said he regrets that flaws in a Microsoft server management program resulted in a nationwide Internet paralysis, even though the company had made the public aware of the flaw last year. "About 20,000 personal computers are at risk of being infected by the SQL Slammer virus, Mr. Ko said. He was referring to a warning Monday by Ahnlab, Inc., an anti-virus software developer, that the worm could affect application programs on personal computers as well as on servers. "The program that Ahnlab mentioned is the one that MS Office users use when they move their data from their desktop computers to SQL servers," Mr. Ko said. "The risk exists only when users run that program." Mr. Ko said his company plans to launch a comprehensive information security service in association with a Korean Internet security firm. The service will be provided free for one year and will be renewable for a fee, Mr. Ko said. Asked why its product was vulnerable to the worm, Mr. Ko said: "The main customers of the product were small and medium businesses, who tend to pay less attention to information security compared to large corporations." But he said it would be "llogical" for Microsoft to open its source software for inspection to forestall security breaches of this type. The computer code for Linux, a Microsoft competitor in server software, is "pen-source" software. by Choi Ji-young
