Blue House names U.S. ambassador
Former Foreign Minister Han Sung-joo has been named ambassador to the United States, sources at the Blue House and the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.Mr. Han was Korea’s foreign minister in 1993 and 1994 at the height of the first North Korean nuclear crisis, which ended in a bilateral agreement between Washington and Pyeongyang. A senior Blue House official said Mr. Han’s experience in that process was key to the consideration of his selection.
Mr. Han is now a foreign relations professor at Korea University. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California at Berkeley.
