Samsung SDI opens battery plant
Samsung SDI Co. yesterday held a ceremony to mark the completion of its secondary battery-cell factory located in Chonan, South Chungcheong province. The company announced that it would double its monthly production from 7 million to 14.1 million battery cells to meet rising demand. With the opening of the new factory, the company has expanded its production lines from seven to 13, doubling its capacity, and lifting it to third place in battery production. Sanyo is in the top position and Sony in second. Samsung SDI said it would increase its production capacity to 18 million battery cells a month, in a bid to raise its global market share from 8 percent last year to 13 percent.
