Blue House at work on Roh U.S. visit

The Blue House has begun aggressive preparatory work for presidential diplomacy in Washington. During his visit to the United States in May, President Roh Moo-hyun will seek a peaceful resolution of North Korean nuclear ambitions and try to encourage a favorable view of Korea’s economy.
Mr. Roh’s schedule this week is full of meetings with influential Americans. He will dine today with the former U.S. President George Bush, who is in Seoul at the invitation of the Federation of Korean Industries. Wednesday, Mr. Roh will meet four members of the U.S. House of Representatives. He will lunch the next day with seven U.S. senators. The congressmen are in Seoul for a U.S.-South Korea Inter-parliamentary Exchange meeting.
Korea’s ambassador to the United States, Han Sung-joo, will go to the United States to prepare for Mr. Roh’s visit, which is scheduled for May 11 to 17.
Blue House secret service, protocol and press officers have begun preparations in the United States for Mr. Roh’s visit. Ban Ki-moon, the presidential senior adviser for foreign affairs, flew to New York yesterday to meet with financial and press figures and United Nations officials.
Ra Jong-yil, national-security adviser, will visit Washington late this month to coordinate the agenda and timetable for the presidential meetings. Mr. Roh will meet with U.S. congressional and cabinet leaders, and with President George W. Bush. Mr. Ra is expected to have preliminary consultations to draft a joint message to be announced by the leaders of South Korea and the United States regarding the North Korean nuclear issues.
