A little lecture for the leader
President Roh Moo-hyun yesterday met with National Assembly Speaker Park Kwan-yong to discuss foreign affairs issues. Mr. Park requested the meeting after returning from a trip to the United States, where he met Vice President Dick Cheney and other officials. The speaker reportedly told President Roh before his U.S. trip next month that the United States is more concerned about U.S.-South Korean relations than about the North’s nuclear problem, and asked Mr. Roh to focus on consolidating the relations of the two countries. Mr. Park also reportedly told Mr. Roh to reassure U.S. investors that his policies are grounded in solid economic principles.
The meeting, some observers said, was a sign of new times, when even the Assembly Speaker would dare give advice to the president.
