Mobile firms adopt new standard
Korea’s three mobile service operators, SK Telecom Co., KTF Co., and LG Telecom Co., yesterday launched a consolidated mobile Internet platform, called wireless Internet platform for interoperability, or WIPI. So far, wireless Internet content developers and mobile handset makers have had to make overlapping investments because the three mobile companies adopted different wireless platforms required to connect to the Internet. SK, KTF, and LG said they would convert their killer wireless Internet applications so that the existing programs could operate on the new platform, which will be known as WIPI version 1.1.
