Samsung takes No.1 in cell phone sales
Samsung Electronics Co. has risen to the world’s second largest manufacturer of mobile phones. According to an industry source, Samsung Electronics sold $2.53 billion of mobile handsets in the first quarter, surpassing Motorola Inc. of the United States, which marketed $2.45 billion of mobile handsets in the same period. “Samsung Electronics’ mobile phones are known as high-end products around the world and they marketed at a premium price, while mobile phones manufactured by Motorola are usually low- to mid-end products and are sold in places like China,” a Samsung official said. Samsung Electronics, however, is still trying to catch up with Motorola, the second runner-up, in the number of mobile handsets sold. Samsung marketed 13.2 million units in the first quarter, capturing a 13 percent of the global market, behind Motorola, which distributed 16.7 million handsets with a 16 percent share. Nokia Oyj held a 37 percent market share in the first quarter, selling 38 million units. “Both sales and market share of Motorola advanced a little in the first quarter, but Samsung’s growth in sales was comparably larger,” an official at Motorola Korea Inc. said. by Kim Jong-yoon
