Sony leads in Korea in digital camera sales

Sony was the top seller of digital cameras in Korea in the first quarter, according to GfK Marketing Service Korea, a market researcher. Sony sold 15,000 digital cameras in Korea in the first quarter, accounting for 19 percent of the market. Sony was also the top seller in the fourth quarter last year. Nikon came the second, with 18 percent of the market, selling 14,000 digital cameras. Canon was the third player, selling 11,000 cameras, for 14 percent of the market. Samsung Techwin Co. was No. 4 with a 12 percent market share. Sony was also the industry leader in revenues, taking in 20 percent of market revenues. Sony’s strong presence in the Korean market is attributable to its price cutting strategies since October last year and the introduction of a wide spectrum of products from the lower end to the higher end, industry analysts said. Sony may be No. l now, an official from GfK said, but it is getting difficult to forecast who will be the next leader of the market. “Large amounts of Nikon cameras are being imported these days, and Canon and Samsung recently stepped up their marketing and introduced higher-resolution products,” the official said. by Kim Hyo-jin
