House expands radio broadcasts to North Korea

WASHINGTON ― The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday voted by 383 to 42 votes to expand broadcasting to North Korean listeners through the Washington-based Radio Free Asia.
The bill increases the hours of programming broadcast by the station to North Korea from 4 to 24 hours a day.
The station is a private corporation with funding approved by the U.S. Congress. It airs programs in nine Asian languages.
Representative Ed Royce, a Republican from California, proposed the bill, which he said would offer North Koreans more information than they can receive in their own closed country.
He also said it would protect their human rights.
The service for North Koreans is operated with U.S. government transmitters and leased shortwave radio facilities in Manchuria near the North Korean border.
