Roh, Australian leader focus on North Korea

The prime minister of Australia, John Howard, said yesterday that North Korea must give up its plan to own nuclear weapons. He met with President Roh Moo-hyun yesterday in talks reportedly dominated by North Korean issues.
Mr. Howard expressed support for South Korea’s exchanges with the North, according to Mr. Roh’s foreign affairs aide, Ban Ki-moon. After the meeting, Mr. Howard agreed that diplomacy could be effective in resolving the problem, but also spoke of the need for a “bottom line” ― the elimination of nuclear weapons in the North.
Mr. Roh requested easier market entry in Australia for Korean automakers, Blue House aides said. Mr. Howard asked for new contracts for the export of Australian liquefied natural gas to Korea. There were no reported discussions of the controversy surrounding the import of Australian cattle.
