[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]No lessons learned from Daegu attack
It has been five months since the fatal arson attack on the Daegu subway. Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corp. took new safety measures after it happened. But I cannot help thinking that these were only temporary measures. Subway passengers will have noticed that everything is now the same as before the incident.Police officers are no longer watching subway stations. Young, temporary patrollers do not seem to care about the safety of the stations. There are no more posters with instructions for passengers in case of emergencies.
The government promised to replace the trains’ inner materials with non-flammable materials and to educate engineers on safety, but citizens cannot help but doubt whether this will be realized.
It is a pity that we seem to make the same mistakes after the disastrous event that shook the country and our people.
