Incentives for women in science

Science, engineering and technology institutes that raise their ratio of female students will receive subsidies from the government to encourage further research. The Ministry of Science and Technology announced yesterday that it had established a regulation to encourage female students to study in these areas. It plans to provide 100 million won ($84,700) in subsidies to 20 selected universities which meet certain male-female ratios determined each year by the ministry according to departments and subjects. The ministry also plans to award scholarships of 5 million won each to 100 selected female students who present their thesis to international scientific journals or receive prizes in any science-related competition. Women account for about 11 percent of all researchers in Korea.
