College again calls Hanaro executive, 67

“Age is no more than a number,” said Shin Yun-sik, the chairman of Hanaro Dream Inc. He was quoting from a television advertisement that he says stimulated him to go back to college, at the age of 67, for a second degree. Mr. Shin’s firm is an Internet portal site subsidiary of Hanaro Telecom, a telephone and Internet service provider. He said that he was strongly impressed by a television commercial that featured a white-haired college student; he applied to and was accepted at Seoul Digital University, where he will start as a junior majoring in animation. He will pick up his books again in September when the new school year starts. The former chairman of Hanaro Telecom, the second largest Korean broadband company, said, “The reason I made up my mind to go to college again is that I want to study things related to the business of my company.” He added that although he does not want to intervene directly in the parent company’s business affairs again, he thought he could advise the firm’s president, Ahn Byeong-kioon after some more studying. Animations and computer games have been central to Mr. Shin’s career; he was involved in the animation business with North Korean interests in 2001 and 2002. by Kwon Hyeok-joo
