Phone numbers to link to Web

Internet users will be able to type in a telephone number instead of a Web site address in about two years, the Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday. It said the Korea Network Information Center, an affiliated institute that manages Korea’s domain names, recently began to develop the system. The ministry said the service would be based on the same technology that now allows the registration of domain names in characters other than Roman. That technology, however, is still suffering from growing pains and has met with mixed success, although it is popular in Korea. Numbers can now be used in Internet addresses, but they still require the “.com” or another domain name at the end of the address.
