North fires a shot, hitting post in South

North Korea said it accidentally fired a shot across the inter-Korean border, which then hit a storage building inside a South guard post compound, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said yesterday.
“South Korean soldiers heard the sound of a gunfire around 11:43 a.m., and found a broken window of a warehouse at a guard post inside the eastern Demilitarized Zone,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. “At that time, soldiers were on duty on the first floor, but no one was injured.” At 1 p.m., North telephoned the South through a direct line set up for the cross-border railroad project and said that the shooting was an accident. “A gun was fired accidentally while our soldiers were cleaning their arms,” Colonel Yu Yong-chol of the North Korean Army explained. It was North Korea’s third acknowledgement of accidental cross-border gunfire since the armistice.
