Politicians face questioning on alleged Hyundai bribes

The Supreme Public Prosecutors Office yesterday said it is investigating evidence that as many as six politicians received bribes from the Hyundai Group. The politicians included a senior incumbent lawmaker of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party, Lee Hoon-pyung.
“Mr. Lee is one of the politicians that will be summoned,” said a high-ranking prosecutor yesterday. “We will subpoena Mr. Lee and others after the Chuseok holidays.”
The prosecution said it has evidence that Mr. Lee in 2000 received a large amount of money from Hyundai. Mr. Lee is also suspected of receiving tens of millions of won from the president of a mid-sized construction firm in return for a promise to help steer a construction contract to that company, the office said.
The prosecution implicated five former lawmakers and incumbent Grand National Party lawmakers, but refused to identify them.
