EU seeks to join talks on North’s weapons

Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Soo-hyuck said yesterday that the European Union has expressed hope of participating in the multilateral negotiations on North Korea’s nuclear arms program.
But Mr. Lee suggested it was unlikely the six-party talks, begun in Beijing last month, would be expanded any time soon.
“It took a lot of difficult work to make the talks happen, and the European Union’s participation should come at an appropriate time rather than immediately” Mr. Lee said.
The two Koreas, the United States, China, Russia and Japan agreed last month that dialogue to establish a nuclear weapons-free Korean Peninsula should continue.
China will schedule the next round of talks. South Korea, the United States and Japan will meet on Sept. 29 and 30 in Tokyo to consult on the nuclear issue.
