Millenium Democrats question Roh’s party loyalty

Loyalists to Millennium Democratic Party founder and former President Kim Dae-jung demanded to know yesterday if President Roh Moo-hyun would remain in the governing party.
Mr. Roh’s own supporters have threatened to split from the main party and form their own.
“The president should no longer mock the public and decide whether he will remain with the [governing] party or join forces to create a new political party,” said Park Sang-cheon, a Kim supporter.
He was referring to a meeting on Wednesday between Mr. Roh and journalists based in Gwangju and South Jeolla province.
During the meeting, Mr. Roh said he desired a change in the Korean political landscape. He also anticipated the birth of a new order out of the present turmoil within the Millennium Democratic Party.
Former party chairman and National Assembly representative Hahn Hwa-kap questioned Mr Roh’s motives. “If [Mr. Roh feels] the Millennium Democratic Party should be disbanded, why did he accept the party’s nomination as its presidential candidate?” he asked.
Presidential chief of staff, Moon Hee-sang, maintained: “The president will not engage in the new political party, and he was merely stating his desires for political reform.”
