Net name shortage to pinch soon

The Internet addresses most widely used in Korea ― those ending with the domain name “kr,” will be exhausted in 2006, the Ministry of Information and Communication said yesterday. The ministry said it would invest 100 billion won ($87 million) to move to a new addressing system that would solve the problem for a long time. The ministry said it also wanted to get a head start commercially; the address shortage is worldwide and standards for the new system, which would increase the number of distinct addresses worldwide from 4.3 billion to a number with 39 digits ― more than enough to meet any conceivable need for a long time.
