KTF Co., the second largest mobile service operator in Korea, will embark on a joint project with Microsoft Corp. to develop next generation telecommunications technology in Korea, said Nam Joong-soo, president of KTF. In an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo yesterday, Mr. Nam said that during a recent visit to the Microsoft’s U.S. headquarters the two firms agreed that they would be the first comer in next-generation wireless telecommunications, based on customer centered management and niche marketing. How does Microsoft forecast the telecommunications market? According to Pieter Knook, corporate vice president of mobile and embedded devices and network service providers, the buzzwords for the future telecommunications market will be integrated services. Services that combine wired and wireless, telecommunications and broadcasting, or the Internet and broadcasting will be the profit base for mobile companies. I agree with his assessment. Following Intel, Microsoft is said to be pursuing the establishment of a research and development center in Korea. It is natural that these companies show interest in Korea, which has a great information technology infrastructure. Microsoft has invested in KTF. If Microsoft sets up a research and development center in Korea, it will proceed with a project regarding next-generation telecommunications technology with us. The domestic market is already saturated. What will be the strategy? I do not think the domestic market is saturated. We still can increase subscribers if we introduce to the market such products as wireless terminals that allow users to check the whereabouts of their pets or to check information on products. Another big market will involve wireless terminals that enable customers to search for price information in small stores. These are niche-market products. by Choi Hyung-kyu
